Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how Westerlund Technologies ("we", "us", "our") collects, uses, shares, and protects your personal information when you use the K53GL application. It should be read with our Terms of Service. We process personal information in strict accordance with the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA).

The app is intended for users aged 16 years or older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 16. If we learn that we have collected such information, we will delete it. A parent or guardian who believes a child under 16 has provided us with personal information may contact us to request deletion.

Account information: email address, username, password (stored in hashed form via Supabase Authentication), optional profile image, selected vehicle licence category (light motor vehicles, heavy motor vehicles, motorcycles), Google Sign-In profile metadata if applicable, and your acceptance of these terms.

Usage and progress data: structured quiz and exam attempts, answers, scores, timings, questions completed, XP, streaks, league and leaderboard position, achievements, daily quests, and rewards claimed.

Reward & engagement tracking: data related to optional earn-XP features, such as watching rewarded ads via Google AdMob, social media shares, and store ratings.

Device and technical data: device type, operating system, app version, language, approximate region, crash and diagnostic data via Firebase Analytics, and advertising identifiers used by Google AdMob.

Guest data: if you use the app without an account, your progress is stored locally on your device storage and is not linked to an identified person until you register or link an account.

To create and operate your account via Supabase; to save, sync, and track your vehicle-scoped progress; to calculate XP, streaks, achievements, leagues, and leaderboard rankings; to display public profiles and rankings to other users; to send push notifications and alerts for task reminders and rewards; to serve and measure advertising via Google AdMob banner and rewarded ads; to process telemetry and app engagement metrics via Firebase Analytics; to prevent fraud, cheating, bot manipulation, and abuse; to maintain security and troubleshoot; to comply with legal obligations; and to improve the app through aggregated analysis.

We process your information because it is necessary to perform our agreement with you (providing the app), because you have consented (for example, to notifications, profile images, rewarded ads, or personalised advertising), to comply with the law, or for our legitimate interests in operating, securing, and improving the service in a way that does not override your rights.

Your username, profile image, XP, league, streak, achievements, and leaderboard position are visible to other users of the app. Do not use a username or image that reveals information you do not wish to make public. Your email address and authentication details are never shown to other users.

We share personal information only with operators who help us run the app, under appropriate confidentiality and security obligations. These include our cloud hosting, database and authentication provider (Supabase), and our advertising and analytics partners (Google AdMob and Firebase Analytics, which process device and advertising identifiers under their own privacy policies). We may also disclose information where required by law, court order, or regulatory authority, to protect our rights, property, or the safety of Westerlund Technologies and others, or in connection with a business transfer. We do not sell your personal information.

Our cloud and infrastructure service providers may store or process data on servers outside South Africa. Where this occurs, we take reasonable steps to ensure the recipient is subject to laws, contractual obligations, or binding rules that provide an adequate level of protection comparable to POPIA.

We keep your account and progress data for as long as your account remains active and for a reasonable period afterwards to meet legal, accounting, security, and dispute-resolution requirements, after which it is deleted or anonymised. Local guest data remains on your device until you clear it or uninstall the app.

We apply reasonable technical and organisational measures, including encrypted transport (HTTPS), hashed passwords, and Supabase Row-Level Security (RLS) database policies, to protect your information. No system is completely secure, however, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. You are responsible for keeping your password confidential.

Subject to POPIA, you may request access to the personal information we hold about you, request correction or deletion, object to processing, withdraw consent (for example, by disabling notifications or personalised ads in your device settings), and lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator of South Africa. You can update your username, avatar, and licence category directly in Settings, and may request account deletion at any time.

The app stores data locally on your device (such as your session, theme, notification preferences, quiz progress, and guest XP) via local storage mechanisms so the app can function. Clearing this storage will remove guest progress permanently.

The app may link to or display content from third parties, or integrate third-party ad networks. Westerlund Technologies assumes no liability for their privacy practices, content, or policies. The app serves as an independent study aid and is not officially affiliated with any testing body or department of transport.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date will change and, for material changes, we will provide reasonable in-app notice. Continued use after the changes take effect constitutes acceptance.
